The website was created by Dr. Ron Chang Lee while pursuing graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. To expand its educational offerings, ESL Fast was established in 2006. Together, the two websites now provide one of the largest collections of free English teaching and learning resources available online.

ESL Robot 5 is an AI-powered English tutor that brings the long-envisioned concept of computer-assisted language learning to life. More than just a chatbot, ESL Robot uses state-of-the-art artificial intelligence to simulate a real human tutor that not only chats with students but also identifies their language errors and teaches them how to express themselves naturally and idiomatically.
ESL Robot provides personalized feedback, learning tips, tests, and exams to support continuous language improvement. Its Free Chat feature allows students to enjoy casual conversation without constant correction, making learning both productive and enjoyable.
By incorporating Text-to-Speech (TTS) and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technologies, students can both speak with and listen to their AI tutor, creating a truly interactive language-learning experience.
To make English learning more engaging and motivating, ESL Fast has implemented a gamified points-based reward system that encourages consistent practice and enhances user engagement.
Users earn between 2 and 15 points for completing an exercise with 100% accuracy, depending on its length and level of difficulty. Points are awarded only for perfect performance. If users do not achieve a full score, they are encouraged to try again.
When mistakes are made, an animated character appears with the message:
"You made some mistakes. Try again! You'll earn points when you get it 100% correct."
Once users achieve a perfect score, the character reappears with congratulatory messages and sound effects, reinforcing a sense of accomplishment.
Students receive 5 points for every 15 minutes of active study. Qualifying activities include completing exercises, listening, reading, and vocabulary practice. Users must study for at least 15 consecutive minutes to earn points, and inactive time is not counted.
To promote consistency, students are encouraged to study every day. If a student does not study for an entire day, 5 points are deducted from their total score.
Registered users are ranked according to their total accumulated points. The Leaderboard displays the top 50 users, including their names, scores, and countries. Every member can see their current ranking when they log in, fostering a sense of achievement and friendly competition.

Each time a student reaches 1,000 points, a "Take a Test" button becomes available when accessing ESL Robot. In addition, for every 10,000 points earned, a "Take an Exam" option will appear, allowing learners to assess their progress at important milestones.

Advertising revenue helps cover website maintenance costs and supports the work of writers, voice artists, and developers who contribute to our growing library of educational resources.
